Comets are made out of a lot of things. Comets are made out of gases, dust ,rocks and ice. Basically they are made out of almost everything that are floating all around space.
What are Comets?
Comets are bodies that orbit the sun. Comets have a time limit. Some Comets are a few years and some are hundreds or thousands of years. Comets are made out of things that are floating around space. Comet comes from the greek name for hair. Ancestors thought Comet were stars that have flowing hair trailing behind.
Did Comets kill the Dinosaurs?
65 million years ago species and Dinosaurs died in a very short time. People thought that the Comet was 10 km in size that hit the earth we live in. Scientists believed that the impact the Comet made destroyed great amounts of dirt and rocks. Parts of a Comet
Comet Hale-bopp is a comet that was seen on July 23, 1995. Comet Hale-bopp is a comet that has two colours and they are blue and white. Hale-Bopps was seen near jupiter by Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp. This comet could be seen in bright city skies and it might been the most viewed Comet in history. It will not be seen again until for another 2,400 years.
Comet Swift-Tuttle
Comet Swift-Tuttle was seen on July 1962 by two american astronomers and their name are Lewis Swift and Horace Tuttle. Every 120 years this comet gets closer and closer to the sun the comet leaves a trail of dust. Scientist said this comet could collided with earth someday.
Comet Hyakutake
Comet Hyakutake was seen by Yuji Hyakutake on the date January 30, 1996. He used a pair of binoculars in the spring. This comet has the longest tails. This is not this comets first visit to the solar system. People have calculated the Comet's orbit and believed the comet was here about 8,000 years ago. The orbit of this Comet will never bring it near the sun for 14,000 years.
Comet Halley
This Comet is probably the most famous Comet in history. This comet was named after an astronomer named Edmund Halley who calculated it's orbit. He predicted that the Comets seen in the year 1531 and 1607 were the same objects that follows a 76 year old orbit. But then Halley died 1742. He never seen if his prediction was true. In 1758 the Comet returned on Christmas. This Comet will return to the inner solar system in 2061.
COMET SHOEMAKER-LEVY 9
Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 was named after Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker and David Levy. Carolyn, Eugene and David seen the comet in 1993. The Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collided with the planet jupiter. The impacts were huge so it created hot bubbles of gas with large dark scars that covered jupiter's sky. Sir Isaac Newton
He is a great English scientist, that discovered that comets move in egg shape around sun. He thought that the Comets were part of the Solar system just like planets and they could return over and over again.
